542. While the register is open for registration, the person in charge of it shall keep it under his supervision at all times.
The clerk or the clerk-treasurer may, however, specially designate an assistant to the person in charge of the register to replace him when he is absent and assist him in performing his duties. Before taking office, the assistant shall swear that he will perform his duties according to law.
